Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the Tour for?

Anyone can join! Our travel arrangements are ideal for socially-conscious travelers that place value on mutual learning, community-building, and development through solidarity. Tour groups consist of ten to twenty individuals interested in obtaining an understanding of the destination country that traditional forms of tourism can simply not offer. Due to the educational nature of our tours, they are frequently attended by members of the media, non-profit workers, and union members.

What kind of activities are included?

The group meets with organizations that Horizons of Friendship supports and visits field projects in the region. Activities include presentations, workshops and travel to communities directly involved in the projects. A detailed itinerary is available upon request.

How do you travel and where do you stay?

Your comfort and safety are our number one priority. Our tour groups stay in secure hotels, and travel to field projects during the day via comfortable buses. To ensure all travelers are aware of daily activities, traveling plans, and accommodation arrangements, the Horizons team will provide daily overviews to travelers in the evenings while on location.

How are your tours different than other travel tours?

Unlike commercial tours, we strive to develop a long-lasting bond and mutual solidarity between the North and South. We offer a different approach from 'Volunteer Abroad' programs and agencies that focus largely on rolling out construction and building projects. At the heart of our Tours lies the determination to raise awareness about the complex challenges in Central America and Mexico, and highlight the vital community work needed to overcome them.
