Strengthening Women’s Rights
“Reinvesting in Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) in Guatemala: Supporting Indigenous Lives by Re-equipping Traditional Midwives in the Municipality of Momostenango”
A group of people participating in the Horizon of Friendship’s Strengthening Women’s Rights project.
Cause Summary
This project responds to requests for support received from the traditional midwives in the Municipality of Momostenango, a large area in the northwest of the Department of Totonicapán. Traditional midwives have asked to be resupplied with tools and equipment needed to ensure safe and hygienic deliveries, and further education and up-to-date practices in the pre-, intra, and post-natal care of mothers, infants, pregnant women, and children under five to safely support health.
Our partner PIES has begun implementing this project, first identifying A midwife to facilitate overall project goals, Veronica Mazariegos. Veronica is a Nursing Assistant with 10 years of experience in conducting knowledge exchanges related to prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, and newborn care. She is an Indigenous women and mother herself, speaking Spanish K’iche and proficient in delivering education that is culturally relevant to women, mothers, and fellow midwives. She is also well-versed in promoting delivery practices that prioritize a clean and safe childbirth.
