3 Reasons Why You Should Travel With Us On The 2018 Mexico Tour

Join us in Mexico on February 5th to 14th, 2018

Since 1993, Horizons has been leading educational tours to Central America & Mexico, giving travellers a unique and in-depth look at the culture, history, and social context of the country. The 2018 Mexico Educational is shaping up to be one of our most exciting tours to date, and we invite you to join us.

Visit Indigenous Communities

Over the course of the tour, we’ll be visiting some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Mexico primarily inhabited by Indigenous peoples. Some of the villages we’ll be visiting include San Cristobal de las Casas, Zinacantan, and San Juan Chamula. We’ll also be meeting and speaking with communities members from the Tumbala community, one of the Indigenous groups native to Chiapas.

Meet local organizations who are making an impact

In Chiapas, half the population lives with chronic food insecurity, meaning that many families don’t know where they’ll be getting their next meal from. Indigenous farmers are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity as it is increasingly difficult for them to produce healthy and nutritious food to feed their families. Complex terrain, limited access to land, and high exposure to crop failure and diseases is contributing to food insecurity in the region.

Indigenous farmers spend days working the land by hand in order to make the soil usable for milpa (corn, bean, and squash) farming.

On this tour, Horizons’ local partner “The Economic and Social Development of Indigenous Mexicans” (DESMI), will be providing us with an update on how they are working to find solutions to this ongoing food crisis. Participants on this tour will have the opportunity to interact with DESMI staff.

Expand your worldview

Every educational tour is a new adventure. No two tours are ever the same – we craft each tour based on the party size, background of the delegates, and the ongoing political, economic, and social landscape of the country. Over the last 24 years, we’ve led hundreds of engaged Canadians to the South to see poverty and injustice firsthand. Here’s what a past tour participant had to say about their adventure to Mexico with us:
