Project Summary

This project is currently being implemented with our project partner The Intercommunity Association of Communities Working Together for the Economic and Social Development of Lower Lempa (ACUDESBAL) in the Bajo Lempa region of El Salvador, one of the poorest regions in the country.

This project was brought to us by ACUDESBAL after deliberation with the 29 communities it supports, local NGOs, and community leaders. These communities have asked for support for their top priorities including improved disaster risk management, violence prevention, revitalizing cultural identity, and providing new infrastructure for sports and recreational activities. This project aims to support the communities by providing programming that addresses the improvement of climate change and disaster resilience; helping them to reduce the impact of frequent storms which will aid in the recovery of local economic conditions and livelihoods after the losses resulting from the pandemic and recent climate disasters, flooding, and droughts. These communities have also asked for support in strengthening cultural and environmental awareness, increasing advocacy to ensure that disaster protection, response, and relief are priorities for government funding in the future, and providing youth with an opportunity to be a part of the community rather than turning to gangs.

This two-year project will directly benefit 460 people and low-income subsistence farming families in 29 communities in the Bajo Lempa region of El Salvador. These beneficiaries include members of civil and municipal protection commissions who will be supported in strengthening capacities to respond in times of emergency, building stronger community climate change resilience measures and protocols, and increasing access to safe sports, recreation opportunities and strengthened connections to important cultural traditions for 150 youth.
