Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who is the Tour for?

Anyone can join. The group is generally 10-20 individuals who are interested in getting a different perspective of a country that other forms of travel do not offer. It is suitable for the socially conscious traveler who wants to go beyond tourist attractions. Some individuals also attend on behalf of their organization (eg. union, non-government organization, media).

What kind of activities are included?

We visit grassroots organizations that Horizons of Friendship supports and their projects in the region. This includes attending presentations, seeing projects in the field, and discussing the history and context of the work. A variety of cultural activities are also included. A detailed itinerary is available upon request

Where do you travel / stay?

Every year we take a group to a location in Central America and southern Mexico. The 2017 trip is to Guatemala. Travelers stay in quality hotels and travel by comfortable bus to the projects during the day. A discussion/debrief of the day's activities is generally held in the evenings over dinner.

What is unique about this / How is it different from volunteering abroad?

Horizons of Friendship projects address human rights and socio-political needs. The tour is about raising awareness, showing solidarity, and learning about issues on the ground at the national/international level. This gives a different perspective than other volunteer opportunities where travelers may build something or volunteer in one community.
