Promotion of Indigenous women's rights to prevent and address violence against women in Miskitu Indigenous communities:

The project aims to build capacity in local communities amongst both men and women to prevent inter-family, sexual and gender-based violence. The project has three major components: training young women on how to access to justice and legal services, working directly in the communities to support women who have experienced violence, and supporting community leaders and traditional Miskitu authorities in the application of the law and advocating within the official justice system.

Major Achievements of the Project:

  • Through nine workshops, 160 Miskitu Indigenous women in rural communities on the North Coast of Nicaragua have received training in their first language (Miskitu) on the new Comprehensive Law on Violence against Women (Law 779).
  • 44 communal judges and community leaders (30 M; 14 F)  are now actively engaged at the community level with a stronger understanding of laws on violence against women and how to better prevent such violence in their communities.
  • AMICA’s legal aid office has provided legal advice and accompaniment to a total of 86 cases involving inter-family, sexual, and gender-based violence.
  • AMICAwas able to develop and publish 1,000 illustrative posters in Spanish and Miskitu on ending violence against women.
